That Dandy Classic Track of the Day #28 – En Vogue

My Lovin’ (You’re Never Gonna Get It) – En Vogue (Funky Divas, 1992)

The reason I’m doing this one is it’s the closest thing I’ve heard to our theme song for our podcast “That Dandy Classic Music Hour”. The parallels are undeniable. What’s also undeniable is this is a damn good song. The beginning sets you up for the fun, sing-along ear candy that’s to follow.

The main topic is something that pop music has been covering since the beginning of pop music. Bad love, but with a modern (in 1992) twist. Basically a jerk who isn’t treating his lady is going to be denied the ultimate payoff, sexual gratification (i.e. “My Lovin”). But instead of pining for said man, the ladies of En Vogue are empowered to let him know they’re not falling for his shit (this is musically verified by using James Brown “The Payback” as the main sample) and he’s going to be the one suffering the consequences. And the way they do so is memorable for the song is a strong dance track with hooks galore.

The back-up singers are top-notch and the refrain “never gonna get, never gonna get it” is a sultry taunt I’m sure many men suffered during this songs heyday. The memorable breakdown really ups the ante in the song as this is 1990’s R & B at its finest.  It ended up reaching #2 on Billboard’s Top 100 in May, 1992 and ended up being one of the biggest hits of the 1990’s. At risk of sounding awkward “You go girls!”.
